Reading Skills

Question 1. Read the following passage carefully and answer the questions that follow.

Books are one of the most useful sources of knowledge. They introduce us to different ideas, cultures, people and experiences. A good book can improve our understanding of the world and also help us develop our language and thinking skills. Reading regularly makes a person more thoughtful and improves the ability to express ideas clearly.

In the present time, students have access to digital books, online articles and educational websites. These resources can make learning easier, but students should use them carefully. Every piece of information available on the internet is not necessarily correct. Therefore, students should check information from reliable sources.

Reading should not be limited only to textbooks. Stories, biographies, newspapers and informative books can also help students develop their knowledge. A student who develops the habit of reading regularly can learn beyond the classroom and become more confident in expressing ideas.

(i) What is one major benefit of reading books?

(ii) How does regular reading improve a student’s abilities?

(iii) What digital resources are available to students today?

(iv) Why should students check information available on the internet?

Reading books can improve the ability to express ideas clearly.

Question 2. Read the following analytical information carefully and answer the questions.

A school conducted a survey to know how students spend their free time. The survey included 200 students.

(iv) What conclusion can be drawn from the given data?

Question 3. Read the following passage and prepare notes using suitable headings and sub-headings.

Time management is an important skill for students. A student who plans the day properly can complete studies, recreation and other activities without unnecessary stress. Making a timetable helps in giving sufficient time to different subjects. Difficult subjects should be studied when the mind is fresh. Short breaks between study sessions can also improve concentration.

Students should avoid wasting too much time on mobile phones and social media. They should set clear goals and complete important tasks first. Regular revision is also necessary because it helps students remember what they have studied. Good time management does not mean studying all the time. It means using available time wisely and maintaining a balance between study, rest and other activities.

Question 4. Write a summary of the passage given in Question 3 in about 50 words and give a suitable title.
